Men's Basketball Falls to Widener By One

ASTON, Pa. –  Widener University’s Charles Jones hit the winning free throw with three seconds left in the game to give the Pride a 68-67 win over Neumann College  Tuesday night as the Knights opened their home schedule in Bruder Gymnasium.

 

Mike Walukiewicz led the Knights with 16 points. Toure’ Wright netted nine. Wright also pulled down 13 rebounds. Sean Armstrong grabbed 10. Na’Sheed Linton dished out seven assists.

 

Jones led the Pride with 22 points, including the winning point. Jarrell Nelson scored 15 points and Matt Sosna netted 10.

 

Neumann (1-2) came out strong to start the game and took an eight point lead, 13-5, nine minutes in. The Knights extended their lead to as many as 13 in the half and took a 34-26 lead into the locker room.

 

Widener (2-1) opened the second half on fire and scored the first nine points of the half to take a 35-34 lead. Neumann built its lead back up to nine a few times throughout the half, but a 6-0 run by the Pride with under three minutes left to play put the teams neck-and-neck. There were four tied scores in just the last three minutes of play.

 

With 52 second left and the game tied at 64, Sosna tipped in a bucket and Nyere Miller made 1-of-2 from the line to put Widener up 67-64. Walukiewicz sank a three-pointer to net the game at 67-all with 18 on the clock. Jones then made 1-of-2 to win the game for the Pride.

 

Neumann will be off until after Thanksgiving then it travels to Elizabethtown College on Saturday, November 29. The game is set to tip-off at 3 p.m.
