Volleyball defeats Swarthmore 3-2

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Neumann's volleyball team returned to it's winning ways tonight as the Knights defeated cross town foe, Swarthmore College.  Neumann took the first set then proceeded to lose the next two.  The Knights focused in game four to claim a victory and held onto the match in the fifth and final set.  The final score was 3-2 in favor of Neumann with the scores being 25-16, 22-25, 23-25, 25-17, 16-14.

The Knights were led by sophomore Ashley Mathis (Norristown, PA/Norristown) who led the Knights with 18 kills.  Mathis was supported by senior Julia Tarloski's (Malvern, PA/ Bishop Shanahan) 13 kills and junior Emilee Gruse's (Lafayette, IN./ St. Mark's) 11 kills.  Senior Kristen Verone (Folsom, PA./Cardinal O'Hara) set her teammates up with 46 assists. 

On defense the Knights were led by senior Meghan Wilson (West Chester, PA./Bishop Shanahan).  Wilson earned 25 digs with fellow senior Rachael Sokolovich (Media, PA / Ridley) getting 20 digs as well.  Despite the solid numbers from varying team members, head coach Deana Jespersen was not satisfied with the team's performance.  Jespersen stated, "We did not deserve to win this match.  We could have played better and will use our upcoming practices to work on all of the skills we need to work on."

Neumann improves to 1-4 on the season.  The Knights will play at Gettysburg College this weekend as they begin play in the Gettysburg College Battlefield Classic.
