The women’s tennis team hosted Marywood University in a key conference match today. Both teams were looking to start the CSAC season off with a win. The match was close all the way through with both teams tied at 3-3 after singles play. In the end it would be Marywood who would pull out the match 5-4 behind a come from behind win in first doubles 9-7.
Both teams battled for every point they could earn. Marywood took first singles and second singles as junior Allison Trout and freshmen Ali DeTolla both lost 6-4, 6-1 and 6-4, 6-2 respectively. Senior Courtney Hartel pulled out a win at third singles 6-0, 6-2 as did junior Lindsay Ravior at fourth singles with a 6-3, 6-4 win.
Split 2-2 the fifth and sixth single matches would set the stage for doubles. Marywood struck first with a win at fifth singles when Amy Doot defeated Neumann junior Michelle Steward. Sophomore Rachel Coladonato came back in sixth singles with a win for Neumann as she defeated Sarah Lockenmeyer of Marywood 7-6 (3) 6-4.
In doubles play the Knights jumped out to early leads in first and second doubles. Hartel and Trout jumped out to a 4-1 lead in first doubles while DeTolla and Coladonato earned a 3-2 advantage in second doubles. In third doubles the Knights found themselves down 4-1 as Steward and Ravior could not hold serve.
Marywood ended up winning third doubles 8-4 and the Knights kept pace by winning second doubles 8-5. With the match tied 4-4 all eyes turned to Trout and Hartel to pull out a win. The Neumann pair found themselves down 6-7 and needing to break Marywood’s serve.   In the end Trout and Hartel would be unable to pull out the set and fell to Marywood 9-7.
