The field hockey team travelled to Frostburg, Maryland today to take on Frostburg State University's field hockey team. The Knights were attempting to re-group from their 8-0 loss against Widener. While the Knights ended up losing 4-3, they were able to find a balanced attack and stronger defensive. Head Coach
Sarah Kurpel was impressed with the team's effort on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball stating, “I think we all were suffering after the Widener loss so watching the team play today was enjoyable. They attacked when they could on offense and they hustled and worked together on defense.”
Neumann scored first at the 16 minute mark of the first half to take a 1-0 lead. Junior
Lauren Hood (Norristown, PA. / Kennedy-Kenrick) took a pass from freshmen
Megan Scott (Sea Cliff, NJ / North Shore HS) to give the Knights their first lead of the year. FSU tied the score at 1-1 with a goal in the 29
th minute of the first half. But, Neumann quickly responded by scoring their second goal with 1:39 in the first half as senior Rachel DiCicco (South Dennis, NJ. / Middle Township HS) scored off of an assist from freshmen
Melissa Malick (Media, PA. / Penncrest HS).
Behind 2-1 to start the second half Frostburg State scored two back to back goals to take a 3-2 lead. DiCicco and Malick teamed up again as DiCicco tied the game at the 5:15 mark. However, FSU would use their home field advantage to make one more run at Neumann and scored a fourth goal to win the game 4-3.
Despite the loss the Knights may have found themselves and may have begun to lay a foundation they can build off of for the season. Neumann falls to 0-4 on the season. The Knights will play again on Tuesday September 9
th as they play their first home game of the season against Swarthmore College.
