Baseball To Begin CSAC Championships Friday

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann College Baseball advanced to the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) baseball playoffs.  This is the first time the Knights have advanced to the playoffs in 10 years.

 

The Knights clinched the No. 3 seed and will compete against the No. 2 seed Gwynedd Mercy College on Friday, May 8th. The game is set to start at 11:00 a.m. at Bear Stadium in Boyertown, Pa. The other first round match-up is between No. 1 seeded Keystone College and No. 4 seeded Centenary College and will take place at 3 p.m.

 

Neumann finished the regular season with a 19-17-1 overall record and 7-7 in the CSAC. The Knights and Griffins rounded out the regular season against each other last weekend. GMC swept the double header from the Knights 10-9 and 9-5.

 

In the first game, Bobby Callan went 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Scott Hammell started the game and went two innings. He allowed three runs on three hits. Joseph Slater went three innings and allowed two runs. Ray Schmoltze took the loss in 1.1 innings, allowing five runs, four earned, on five hits.

 

The Knights opened the game with five runs in the top of the first. Neumann would add four more runs in the top of the third, including a base-clearing double for Callan, to take a 9-1 lead. But the Griffins would not go quietly. GMC scored two runs in the third and two in the sixth for a 9-5 game. The Girffins would then score five runs in the bottom of the seventh for the 10-9 come-from-behind win.

 

In the second game, Matt Grossi and George Hatton had two hits. Kevin Lengyel scored two runs. Stan Sauk started the game and took the loss. He went 2.1 innings and allowed eight runs. Art Wharton, Sean Quigley and Kevin Oleszewski all pitched in relief.

 

For the season, Matt Gallagher, has led the Knights with 39 runs and 39 RBIs. He also has a .391 batting average and 45 hits for the team. 

 

Matt Grossi, has a .397 batting average, leads the team with 50 hits and also has 31 RBI this season. 

 

Pitcher, Kevin Lengyel, leads the team with a .409 batting average, 31 runs, 45 hits and 33 RBIs.  Lengyel has also pitched in 52.2 innings so far this season, including one complete game while striking out 40 hitters.

 

The games will continue on Saturday at Bear Stadium in Boyertown, Pa. Games begin on Saturday at 11 a.m. with an elimination game. The Championship game will be on Sunday, Place is to-be-determined.
