ASTON, Pa. – Kevin Lengyel, of the Neumann University's baseball team, was named the 2009 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Baseball Performer of the Year, announced Sunday, July 19. The team is voted on by the sports information offices of the 28 area institutions from the Philadelphia metro area.
Lengyel batted .379 in 40 games this season. In 132 at-bats, the senior had 50 hits, 12 doubles, scored 35 runs and knocked in 37 RBI. From the mound, Lengyel went 5-4 in 12 appearances. In 75.2 innings pitched, he has struck out 55 batters.
The Sports Management major helped the Knights to their first post-season appearance in 10 seasons. Neumann finished as the runner-up in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC), falling to Keystone College, 12-1. The Knights received a bid to the ECAC Tournament. Neumann defeated Delaware Valley College, 12-5, in the first round. The Knights fell to Penn State-Altoona, 5-4, in the semifinals.
The Knights finished the season 22-20-1 and tied the school record for most wins in a season for the baseball team.
