Softball Ends its Season with 7-5 loss

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Neumann University softball teams ended its quest in the 2010 NCAA Regional Tournament with a 7-5 loss to Kean University Saturday evening.

Stephanie Marrone and Kim Kirkpatrick each had two hits for the Knights. Kirkpatrick added three RBI and Marrone scored two runs. 

Brittany Campbell started the game and went 5.2 innings. Sarah McGann and Rachel Purpuro combined for the last 1.1 innings. 

Kean plated three runs in the top of the third inning to take an early advantage.

Kirkpatrick helped the Knights answer in the bottom of the third inning with a bases-clearing triple.

The game remained knotted at three-all until the sixth inning when the Cougars plated two runs on a double. Kean took advantage of a Neumann error to add two runs in the seventh for a 7-3 lead.

The Knights did not go quietly in the seventh as Marrone led off with a single. Kirkpatrick then walks and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Callie Emel then hit a pitch on the nose, but lined out to third base.

Jacki Herrington then hit a single to left to knock in Marrone. Lauren Castiello followed with a single to shortstop and Kirkpatrick scored. With two outs, Alyssa Falsetti drew a walk to load the bases. Deanna Christy then popped out to end the game and the Knights come-back try.

Neumann ends the season 27-18 with the 7-5 loss.
