Knights Fall to Wolverines in Extra Innings

DOVER, Del. – The Neumann University team wrapped up its 2010 season with a 7-6 loss in 10 innings to Wesley College in the ECAC South Region Tournament Saturday evening.

Mathieu Vallieres knocked in four runs and had two hits. Matt Grossi had two hits and two RBI. Bobby Callan had three hits and scored two runs.

Josh Krautwald went 8.0+ innings and struck out six. Mike Dicken and Erik Klimoff pitched in the ninth inning. Matt Compton pitched the 10th inning and took the loss. 

Callan opened the game with a triple to right center. Vallieres followed with a single to knock in Callan and take an early 1-0 lead.

Wesley answered with two runs in the home half of the first. The Wolverines added two more runs in the second for a 4-1 advantage. 

Neumann added a run in the fourth and another in the sixth to cut the Wesley lead to 4-3.

With two outs in the top of the ninth inning, Tim Dougherty and Callan both reached base. Vallieres then hit a three-run shot to right field to give the Knights a two run lead, 6-4.

Wesley scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to send the game into extra innings. The Wolverines then scored an unearned run in the 10th inning on a single to win the game 7-6 and take the 2010 ECAC Division III South Baseball Championship.

Neumann ends its season 20-18-1.
