ASTON, Pa. – It took penalty kicks, but the Neumann University women's soccer team advanced to the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Championship game on Wednesday evening. Neumann and Centenary College played to a 0-0 tie after two overtime sessions and the Knights came away 4-2 in penalty kicks to advance.
Neither team could put the ball in the back of the net, so the official outcome of the game is a 0-0 tie. But someone had to advance to the Championship game, so it came down to penalty kicks.
Five players from each team went out to midfield and waited their turn. It would only take four players as the first four Knights scored. The Cyclones made two of their first four attempts and not be able to catch up with only one try left. Heather Hopkins, Alexis Tiernan, Allie MacNeill and Stacie Bolgunas took the penalty kicks.
Briana King made some outstanding stops in net to help the Knights advance.
Neumann is 12-5-1 on the season and will host the Championship game on Saturday against Cabrini College. Cabrini defeated Marywood 3-2 in the other semifinal. Time is to-be-determined.
