OSWEGO, N.Y – The Neumann University men's ice hockey team defeated No. 2 Oswego State 3-0 in the Oswego Tournament championship game Saturday afternoon.
The Knights finished the year on a well received win, just at the Saint Nick of time. As the Knights were looking for a defining win this season, Oswego beared the brunt of the Knights post Christmas wishes. Oswego incurred 12 penalties on the day and the Knights were delighted to see their opponents caged in the sin bin for lengthy spells.
The Knights were tied 0-0 after the first period ended and it was a period played between the blue lines. As there were limited goal scoring opportunities, Goal Keeper
Ross MacKinnon stayed active making 7 saves off of Oswego's two power play opportunities.
The second period saw the Knights hit their stride, flex their muscles and casually jam the puck in the back of the net.
Steve Gervais opened the scoring 8:20 into the second assisted off from
Jordan Zalba and
William Lacasse. The Knights gained an advantage off a power play but couldn't cash in on the opportunity. Oswego earned a power play opportunity, as they desperately tried to even the score, but it was the Knights who extended the lead off their second power play. The second goal of the contest came from
Cory Park complements of
D'Lane Sather and
Aaron Keaney 11:25 minutes into the second period.
The third period was fast and furious with plenty of one man advantages. The third period became chippy and cheerful for the Knights and
Jordan Zalba opened his goal scoring account at the right time. He was assisted at the 11:20 mark from a gratuitous Michael Rey's power play precision pass.
Cory Park was named MVP of the tournament and
Ross MacKinnon was named to the All Tournament team.
Neumann (9-3) will prepare for the Winter Classic on Wednesday January 4
th at Citizens Bank Park. The much anticipated game will feature Penn State University (State College) slated for an 8 p.m. start.
