ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University women's soccer team beat Centenary Cyclones 2-0 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) quarterfinals, Thursday evening.
On a cold fall night, the Knights
Rosie Kays and
Emily Sanders would score a goal each in the second half.
One could tell that it was playoff soccer, as both teams wouldn't manufacture but one opportunity in the first half. The Knights took a shot from distance to give Neumann a 1-0 shot advantage.
Neumann was dangerous in the first half with “Speedy” Sanders hitting light speed on a few occasions. Sanders had a clear line to goal in the 25 minute as she eluded the defender across the end line. She charged towards goal drawing goalkeeper, but there were no available Knights running into the danger zone.
The Knights made the necessary adjustments at halftime as they came out with all guns a blazing. In the 47
th minute, Sanders ripped down the right sideline and served in a delicious service into the Cyclones penalty box. As the ball bounced around, Kays located herself centrally 12 yards from goal. It was as if her right foot had a magnet, as the ball was drawn to Kays right boot. Kays continued with delight striking the ball with great velocity into the upper right hand corner of the net to give the Knights a 1-0 lead.
As the game was coming towards the end of regulation, Sanders atypically found herself in the middle of the field.
Megan Malstrom slipped a ball behind the two Cyclones center and the failed clearance by the Cyclones, provided Sanders the opportunity to strike the ball into the vacated net.
Briana King only made had to make one save.
Stacie Bolgunas,
Becca Burkhart,
Alexis Tiernan and
Tara Dillon stood tall in the back to help preserve the shutout.
The Knights (10-6-2) travel to Cabrini College for the CSAC semifinals, Friday November 2, slated for a 6 p.m. kick-off.
