Softball Falls 10-4 to End Season

SALEM, Va. – The Neumann University softball team finished its season on Saturday at the 2013 NCAA Regional Tournament with a 10-4 loss to Christopher Newport University.

 

Christopher Newport scored a run in the top of the first inning. Neumann responded with three runs in the bottom of the first. Allie White led off with a single, followed by a single by Becca Reinhart. Both scored after Danielle Grayson laid down a bunt and the Captains committed two errors.

 

The Captains then scored three runs in the top of the second for a 4-3 game.

 

With one out and Jacki Herrington on first base in the bottom of the fourth inning, the game went into an hour and a half rain delay. Once play resumed, Mariah Ripken walked, but Neumann could not take advantage of the walks.

 

Christopher Newport added a run on a solo homerun in the top of the fifth. Reinhart doubled in the home half of the fifth and came around to score when Callie Emel reached on an error by the second baseman for a 5-4 score after five.

 

The Captains led off with a double in the sixth inning and came around to score for a two run lead, 6-4. In the bottom of the sixth, Crystal Perlman hit a single and moved to second on a groundout. White then singled to left field, but Perlman was thrown out between third and home to end the inning.

 

Christopher Newport put four runs on the board in the top of the seventh inning for a 10-4 lead.

 

In the bottom half of the seventh, Reinhart led off with a single, followed by Grayson for two on and no one out. With two outs, Herrington walked to load the bases. Ripken then grounded into a fielder's choice that ended the game.

 

Allyson Parris started the game and allowed five runs. Kristin Beaty went 2.1 innings, allowing five runs. Parris came in to get the last out of the seventh inning.

 

Neumann finishes the season 30-16. Reinhart was named to the All-Tournament team, announced on Monday.
