Big 8th Inning Puts Knights Past Greyhounds

AUBURN, N.Y. – The Neumann University baseball team scored four runs in the top of the eighth to defeat Moravian College 5-3 on Thursday morning in an elimination game at the NCAA New York Regional.

 

The teams remained scoreless until the fourth inning. Bill Pace singled with one out. He moved to third on a wild pitch and advanced to third when Tyler Drinkard reached on an error. Pace then scored on an RBI groundout by Matt Sheneman. The Greyhounds responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth for a 1-1 game.

 

Moravian put together some hits and scored two runs on the bottom of the sixth for a 3-1 lead.

 

Heading into the top of the eighth, the Knights had just two hits. In the eighth and ninth innings, Neumann connected on six hits.

 

In the top of the eighth, Kelvin Ortiz reached on an error with one out. Bobby McCormick then hit a double to left center and Brett Smeraglio, pinch runner, moved to third. Will Flores singled to knock in Smeraglio for a 3-2 game. Buddy Elgin knocked a two-RBI double to center field and the Knights took a 4-3 lead. Drinkard singled for Elgin to score and a 5-3 Neumann lead and eventual come-from-behind win.

 

Erik Klimoff went 6.0 innings to start the game. He allowed three runs on seven hits and struck out five. Russ Gilliam got the win, the 30th of his career, going 3.0 innings out of the bullpen. He allowed just two hits and struck out four.

 

Neumann (30-14) will face either Amherst or Cortland on Friday at 1:15 PM.
