WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Neumann University women's basketball team's season came to an end in the ECAC South Region First Round on Wednesday evening. The eighth seeded Knights fell to No. 1 seed Catholic University 74-67.
Erica Marvel led the Knights with 22 points, including six three-pointers. Jessica Schlesman netted 18 points and handed out seven assists. Lauren Walker added 10 points. JoHanna Metzger pulled down 10 boards.
The Cardinals came out with a bang, scoring 14 of the game's first 16 points. The Knights then scored seven straight points for a 14-9 game with 11:44 left in the first half. Catholic would hold between an eight and 12 point lead for most of the second part of the half. The Cardinals hit a three-pointer just before halftime to take a 38-24 lead into the break.
A few minutes into the second half, Catholic went on a 17-5 run to take a 40-30 game to a 57-35 contest. Neumann responded with an 11-0 run, with features three consecutive downtown baskets by Marvel, to cut the lead to six, 57-51.
The Knights continued to chip away at the Cardinals lead. Marvel hit another three-pointer with 22 seconds remaining in regulation for a six point game, 72-66. Colleen Hinde made 1-of-2 from the line to cut the lead to five. Catholic made two free throws with four seconds remaining to put the game out of reach and Neumann's comeback bid ran out of time.
Neumann finishes the season 15-11 overall.
