Men's Basketball Comes Up Just Short Against Stevenson

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The No. 2 seeded Neumann University men's basketball team fell just short to No. 1 seed Stevenson University, 78-75, in the Championship game of the ECAC Southeast Tournament on Sunday afternoon.

Reggie Coleman netted 20 points to lead the Knights. DeShawn Lowman scored 18 points. Mark Blount notched 11 and Lamon Church added 10.

For most of the first half, the teams stayed within a few points of each other and had a tied score seven times. With 3:53 remaining in the first half, the Mustangs went on to score 12 of the next 13 points to take a 49-39 lead. Church connected on two free throws before the end of the half for a 49-41 game at the break.

With Stevenson holding a 56-45 lead with 15:15 on the clock, Neumann started to make its move. Two free throws by Coleman with 9:58 left in regulation put the Knights within a point, 58-57. After the teams traded a few baskets, Kevin Green hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 62. The Mustangs answered with six straight points. Coleman hit a basket from downtown to cut the lead to three with 4:16 on the clock.

Almost two minutes went by before the next basket would be made. The Mustangs made 1-of-2 from the line. Coleman then connected on another three for a one point game with just over two minutes remaining. The teams then traded three-pointer, the Knights' by Blount. Stevenson made two free throws for a 76-73 game with 47 seconds remaining. Blount was fouled and made both free throws, this time with 24 seconds on the clock. The Mustangs again made both free throws with the clock winding down. Coleman attempted a three-pointer with five second remaining to send the game to OT, but missed and Steven came away with the 78-75 win.

Neumann ends its first season under Head Coach Jim Rullo with a 20-10 record.
