Softball Splits at Day 1 of CSAC Championships

SCRANTON, Pa. – The Neumann University softball team split a pair of games at the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Championship double elimination tournament on Friday. The Knights opened the day defeating Immaculata University 14-0 in five innings. Neumann then fell to Marywood 4-2.

Lauren Wilkie pitched a complete game for her 11th win against Immaculata. She allowed just one hit and struck out three in five innings.

Danielle Grayson hit two homeruns and finished with five RBI. Becca Reinhart had three hits and three runs scored. Becky Guinto knocked in three runs.

The Knights scored three runs in the first inning as Grayson hit her first homerun of the game. In the second inning, Grayson hit her second homerun in her second at-bat, this time a two-run shot. Neumann took advantage of some Mighty Macs errors in the second as well and scored five runs while sending 11 batter to the plate.

In the third inning, Neumann plated six runs, highlighted by a bases-clearing double by Guinto.

Neumann then faced Marywood in the late game of the afternoon. Kristin Beaty started the game and went three innings in the loss. She allowed four runs, two earned, on four hits and struck out two. Haley Broomell pitched five hitless, shutout innings and struck out five.

The Pacers scored the first run of the game in the second inning on a wild pitch. Marywood then plated three runs, two unearned, in the third inning for a 4-0 lead.

In the fourth inning, Grayson led off with a double. Jessica Harrell came around to score on a single by Melissa Rozumalski. The Knights left two runners on base in the inning.

In the top of the seventh, the Knights put two runners on base with one out. Allyson Parris had a pinch hit single to knock in Carla D'Angelo. With the tying run on first base, the Knights struck out twice to end the game.

Neumann (24-10) will face Cabrini tomorrow in an elimination game at 10:00 AM. The winner will face Marywood at 12:00 PM to battle for the CSAC Title.
