ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University women's lacrosse team took one step closer to a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) championship on Saturday afternoon, picking up a 19-10 win over Keystone College in the first round of the conference playoffs.
Brittany Cassidy and
Courtney Petrucelli were the offensive catalysts for the Knights in the opening round win, registering five points apiece on three goals and two assists.
Calie Swegon picked up four points (3 g, 1 a) as well, while
Ally Bee scored three goals.
Gabby Curry had a strong game in net, making 13 saves to send Neumann to the CSAC semifinals.
Neumann started slowly in the opening round contest, conceding three of the game's first four goals to fall behind 3-1 in the first five minutes of play. The Knights would respond though, scoring six of the next seven goals in the half to take a 7-4 lead into halftime. Cassidy and
Kaitlyn Conrad led the way for Neumann in the first 30 minutes, each tallying twice.
Much like the start of the first half, Keystone came out of the gates strong to start the second stanza. The Giants scored twice in the first minute of the half to bring the score back to 7-6, but that was as close as the visitors would get. The Knights got two goals from Swegon, as well as Bee's second goal of the contest to regain a four goal cushion at 10-6 with 21:39 left to play in the contest.
The two teams traded a pair of goals each midway through the frame to make it 12-8, before Neumann opened the game wide open late. The hosts scored seven unanswered goals over a nine minute period late in the game to take a commanding 19-8 lead. Keystone got two tallies back in the game's final minutes, but it wasn't nearly enough as the Knights took home the comfortable 19-10 win.
Neumann (10-8, 5-3 CSAC) moves on to face rival Cabrini University in the CSAC semifinals on Wednesday, May 2
