Aston, PA.-Nellie Mixon won the game hitting a 3-pointer at the final buzzer to give the Knights a 61-59 victory over Cabrini College on Wednesday night at Bruder Gymnasium. The Knights improved their record to 3-2 on the season, while Cabrini falls to 0-4. Kristen Patton led the way for the Knights scoring 21 points, grabbing 14 rebounds and contributing for 6 of 19 steals.
Before the game, Mixon was honored for scoring her 1,000 point in last year's PAC Tournament at Alvernia during the Knights first round playoff game.
Cabrini started off strong scoring the first 4 points of the game. Ashley Pearsal was the spark that lit Knights in the first half making some key plays. At the 12:57 mark she made 2 foul shows to put the Knights on top. However, Kirsten Patton was on a mission scoring Neumann's first bucket. Shortly after that Patton scored her 1,000 point on the free throw to give the Knights a 10-7 lead. The Knight controlled the scoreboard for the rest of the half, but the Cavs kept chipping away at their lead. Nikki Duggan connected for a 3 point field goal to end the half and to close the gap; with the Knights on top 26-25. At the half Patton led the Knights with 8 points. Sharea Middlebrook from Cabrini went 4 for 9 from the field also scoring 8 points. Neumann closed the half shooting at 77.8% from the field.
The Knights came out of the break going on mini run with their largest lead 38-27 at the 13:55 mark The Cavs continued to chip away at the Knights lead. Cabrini kept fighting and took the lead with 7:54 remaining in the contest. Both teams stepped up their play and that resulted in 4 ties in the last 5 minutes of the game. The last tie of the game came with only 52 seconds remaining. Cabrini's Melissa Benedetti gave the Cav's a one-point lead on a made foul shoot. With the scoreboard reading 58-59 visitors, head coach Frank Farnese took a timeout to set up a game plan. With the clock reading 1 second Mixon launched a shot and banked it off the glass for the victory. The win gave the Knights their third victory of the season and their first in the PAC.
Mixon finished the game with 14 points and 5 steals. Leonard scored 9 points on 4-for-6 shooting for the Knights. Leading the way for the Cavs was Nikki Duggan with 19 points.
On Saturday the Knights will travel to Baltimore, MD to play Notre Dame (MD). Tip off is set for 2:00 pm.
