Box Score
Freshman Jesse Cole scored two goals and Neil Trimm recorded a goal and two assist as the Knights slayed the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons 5-2 in non-conference action at home this evening. With the win, the Knights improve to 2-2-0 on the season and record the third consecutive win over SUNY Cortland in program history.
After spending six minutes of the first period short handed and scoreless, Neumann, now at full strength, put the first points of the night on the board when Ryan Heckert was credited with the first goal of his career, on a quick shot which hit the post and slid right behind Cortland goalie Jason Lojewski for the 1-0 first period lead.
The Knights lit it up in the second period scoring their second goal of the contest three minutes into the second stanza. Sophomore Assistant Captain Neil Trimm recorded his sixth consecutive point of the season at the 3:13 mark, after receiving a pass from freshmen Josh Gaynor and Brock Van Slyke who were credited with the assist. Erik Stoyanvich scored the eventual game winner in the 15th minute of the period to extend the Knights lead to 3-0. Neumann's Jesse Cole scored the first of two goals this evening, just under a minute later, on a Neumann power-play caused by a tripping penalty called on Cortland's JonSandos. The Red Dragons did manage to avoid a Knights shutout as MikeCaruso closed out the scoring in the 17th minute of the period cutting Cortland's deficit to three going into the break.
Cortland's frustration continued to grow as Neumann's Jesse Cole added his second and final goal of the night at the 10:45 mark of the third period on a Neumann power-play advantaged caused by a high-sticking penalty on MattNichols. Cortland was able to add one more goal before the final buzzard, but it was not enough to break Neumann's three game winning streak against the Red Dragons.
Neumann will return to action on Friday, November 18, when they will play host to ECAC West Conference rival Utica College.
