BOX SCORE
Geneva, NY - The Neumann Knights ( 5-4, 1-2 ECAC West) were frozen out by the Statesmen of Hobart (6-2, 2-2 ECAC West) College in an ECAC West match up hosted at the outdoor Geneva Recreation Center, in men's ice hockey action tonight.
Neumann struggled early in the first period allowing two power-play goals by the Statesmen. Neumann caught their first and only break of the night when Mike Hedden scored an unassisted rebound goal at the 5:26 mark of the second period. Unfortunately for the Knights, the Statesmen answered with three goals, adding another on a power play, before the second intermission buzzer sounded, ending the period up 5-1.
The Recreation Center in Geneva, New York was a bitter 26 degrees, with a wind chill of 11 degrees. It is the only outdoor rink still used by any ECAC team and proved to be a deciding factor in third period as Neumann continued to struggle in the frigid temperatures. Junior Brett Leonhardt allowed starting goalie Mike Collichio, who had 22 saves in the first two periods, to thaw out, entering the game at the 20 minute mark of the third period. Leonhardt stopped 13 shots, attempting to prevent any further damage by Hobart. Unfortunately, it was not enough, as Neumann's host put two more between the pipes ending before the final horn sounded.
The loss drops the Knights to 5-4 on the season and 1-2 in the ECAC West. Neumann will travel to Elmira College tomorrow to compete in the second ECAC West match up of the weekend at 7:00 p.m. in Elmira, NY.
