Neumann College traveled to snowy Buffalo, New York for an ECAC West conference match up hosted by the Bengals of Buffalo State in women's ice hockey action Saturday night.
Neumann battled to a 1-1 tie in regulation in which Vicki Scott recorded her first collegiate goal of her career as a Knight, in the first 37 minutes of play in the second period. Scott's goal, assisted by Bianca DeSantis, was the first of the afternoon, putting the Knights up 1-0. Buffalo State tied things up in the 10 minute mark of the second stanza but with both teams' goalies performing extremely well, play was force into overtime. Knowing the importance of what a win would mean for the Knights, veteran goalie Lauren Voran, who stopped 28 saves for Neumann, knew what had to be done. Voran was able to stop the only shot that the Knights defense would allow by the Bengals before Tiffany Baker would secure Neumann their first ECAC West conference victory of the season, scoring a break-away goal, in the first minute of overtime play at the Bengal's Ice Arena. Freshman Jessica Bryan was credited with the assist on the game winner. "Our defense really came together today, they made it easy for me and we were able to do what we needed to get the job done. Our freshmen really stepped up and that was really great to see," stated Voran.
The win moves the Knights to 2-4-1 overall and 1-2 in the ECAC West Conference while Buffalo State falls to 3-6-1 overall and 0-3 in the ECAC West.
Neumann will return to action on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. when they with once again be hosted by Buffalo State in the second game of the weekend series.
