Box Score
In a Pennsylvania Athletic Conference dual, the Knights of Neumann College (6-9 overall, 5-3 PAC) hosted the Crusaders of Alvernia College (11-4 overall, 7-1 PAC) in men's basketball action at Bruder Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.
In an effort to hand the Crusader's their first PAC loss of the season, the Knights pulled out to a 35-24 half time lead due to the scoring efforts of Andre Wright (Philadelphia, PA/ Ben Franklin) and Ronnie Fields (Lansdowne, PA/ South Philadelphia), who each put up eight-first half points for the Knights.
Alvernia opened the game with a top of the key three by Lamar Brickus (Coatesville, PA/ Coatesville) and maintained the lead until the twelve minute mark. Neumann's Andre Wright took a pass from Elisha Hannibal (Lansdowne, PA/ Upper Darby) to give the Knights their first tie of the game (11-11). The two teams battled back and fourth until Alvernia went on a six point run to take the lead. However, the fighting Knights would not let up going on an eleven point run making it a 33-22 Neumann game. Alvernia's Chris Talley (Royersford, PA/ Spring Ford) and Neumann's James Swigget (Chester, PA/ Chester) would each shoot for two more closing out the first half making it 35-24 Neumann.
The Knights took the largest lead of the game after the half going up sixteen points over the Crusaders making it 42-26 thanks to the efforts of Swigget and a three-pointer from Hannibal. Neumann held its huge lead over Alvernia until the eleventh minute when Alvernia's Talley scored off a pass from Brickus. The Crusaders closed the gap by scoring 3 three pointers in a row from Garrett Etzel (Shillington, PA/ Governor Mifflin), Brickus, and Talley. Alvernia continued to chip away and came within one point of Neumann, but the Knights took advantage of a Crusader time-out and jumped ahead yet again with Greg Cunningham (Philadelphia, PA/ Strawberry Mansion) making two free throws. The two teams tied it up once more until the final 20 seconds of the game when Elisha Hannibal broke the tie making two foul shots and winning the game for Neumann making the final score 69-67.
When asked how it felt to hand Alvernia their first PAC loss, Head Coach Brian Nugent said, "That's one of the things we did key in on for this game. However, we have played great teams here at Neumann before, so for us this was nothing new. I do think this is the first time that this team has beaten an undefeated PAC team in our own gym, and by winning this game we knew it would give us the respect in the conference that we worked for. Right now we are the only team that can beat Alvernia, so it was a big game for us in the conference."
Coach Nugent also accredited the defensive play of his team. "Our defense was absolutely phenomenal today. They fought for every rebound and never gave up. We scored off of 7 rebounds, and those second chance opportunities were key."
The Neumann Knights will return to action on Monday, January 23rd at 7:00 pm when they will be hosted by Cabrini College in Radnor, PA.
