In the second game of the home and home series the Neumann Knights came out on top right from the start. Twenty seconds into the first period, the Knights took thier second shot on net and with that Kaleigh Schrock (Fr. Fwd.) assisted Ryan Heickert (Fr., Fwd.) scored the first goal of what would be many for the Knights. Neumann continued to battle the Flying Dutchmen throughout the period and their persistence paid off. Their second goal of the night came at 15:16 after a few shots at the goalie, assistant captain Neil Trimm (So., Fwd.) took a rebound shot to force one in for a goal. Trimm's goal was assisted by Mike Hedden (Fr., Fwd.) and Kyle Casey (Fr., Fwd.). The third and final goal of the first period was once again produced by the Trimm- Hedden duo, this time also adding an assist from Sean Cryer (So., Def.). That goal marked Trimm's second goal of the night and Hedden's second assist of the game.
The first period ended with the Knights expressing how they played as a team and if one goes down they all go down. Two Flying Dutchmen along with one Knight were all sent to the box just before the end of the period for a boarding penalty inflicted on one of the Neumann Knights, which caused a bit of a scuffle between the two teams. Which ultimatly led to an interesting second period. Assistant coach, Shawn Grant comments: "I think it was a good start for the guys. It's good to see they came out prepared. I felt the guys had good focus and hopefully we will continue to do well in the second period."
The second period began with numerous whistles as the stripes attempted to gain control on the ice. Neumann added two more goals to the score in the second period. The first goal was set up very nicely. Neil Trimm was credited with an assist by passing to Kyle Casey, who faked the shot, setting up an LVC defender, while making a pass to teammate Mike Hedden for the goal and the 4-0 score. The final goal of the second period came once again from #19, Neil Trimm. It was a great shot from the goalies left side making that a hat trick and counting for Trimm. Besides the two goals, the period ended just as it started. Total penalties for the period: Neumann 7, Lebanon Valley 9.
At 9:25 in the third period, Trimm. skating off the bench leading a pack of skaters, was fed a long pass by Hedden which sent him advancing one on one with the goalie. Trimm looked as if he had been skating circles around the defenders all night, and this time would be no different. Neil Trimm went from left, to right, to left, and back to the right. finishing off with a low shot pass the goalies right side. This would be Trimm's fourth and final goal of the night.
Lebanon Valley College finished the game with just one goal scored at the 16:52 mark of the third period. Chris Finnerty (Sr. Fwd.) scored of an assist by teammates Jason Slusher (Sr. Def.) and Matt Rowe (Fresh. Fwd.).
Neumann 's Neil Trimm, with his four goals and one assist, Mike Hedden, with one goal and three assists, and Brett Leonhardt (Jr. Goalie), who had a total of thirty saves for the night were all named stars of the game in the ECAC West conference match up.
Head Coach Dennis Williams commented after the game, "Neil Trimm's four goals and one assist proves why he is named one of the best in the nation. Brett Leonhardt had a great game allowing only one goal. Overall we need to play for the full sixty minutes. Tonight we played for about thirty. We need to learn to be consistent especially with Elmira coming in. We need to work on discipline instead of some shifts on and some shifts off."
Neumann ends the weekend with a 5-3-0 record in the ECAC West and a 14-5-0 overall record. Neumann plays at home next weekend facing Elmira College on Friday, February 3 at 7:00.
