Fredonia, NY - Neumann College scored 1 in the first period, 3 in the second and added another in the third en route to a 5-2 victory over SUNY Fredonia in men's hockey action Saturday night.
Neumann's Kyle Casey scored first for the Knights on a 6-5 power play 12:22 into the first period giving Neumann a 1-0 advantage going into the first intermission. Neil Trimm and Matt Ward assisted on the play.
Neumann went up 2-0 eight minutes into the second period after Matt Ward scored the first of two consecutive goals at 8:21. The freshman forward scored the eventual game winner and his second goal of the night, just seven minutes later, after receiving a pass from Mark Vliet and Sean Cryer. Knights' sophomore Mike Hedden added to the Knights scoring spree, scoring an unassisted goal at 17:30 and putting the Knights up 3-0 going into the break.
The evening's hosts came out tough in the third period scoring two goals in the first 5 minutes of play. However Neumann's Brett Leonhardt, who is 3-0 on the season, would not let them get any closer. The senior from Waterloo, Ontario turned away 28 shots in the win. His efforts provided Neumann's Neil Trimm with the right momentum to score his 12th goal of the season and record the 100th point of his career, with a quick shot to the back of the net, four minutes into the third period.
The 5-2 win extends Neumann's season unbeaten streak to 10 and moves the Knights to 9-1-4 on the season.
