No. 8 Neumann College Wins 25th Annual Cardinal Classic Championship

With a 4-3 overtime win over tournament host SUNY Plattsburgh (5-6-4), the No. 8 Neumann College Knights (11-1-4) clinched the 2006 Cardinal Classic in Plattsburgh, New York.     

 

Neumann College scored two goals in the first, one in the second and the game winner 7-minutes into overtime extending their unbeaten streak to twelve in men's ice hockey action this evening.

 

No. 15 Plattsburgh State took an early lead, scoring a power play goal 3:06 into the opening period.

 

Neumann's Mark Van Vliet answered just over a minute later with a quick shot off a Matt Ward and Erik Stoyanvich assist. The Knights then went up 2-1 when Ward scored on a Neumann power play at 8:15. Sean Cryer and Vliet were credited with the assist. Plattsburgh tied the game 10 seconds later sending both teams into the locker rooms tied at two.

  

Neumann went up 3-2 when Mike Hedden connected with Neil Trimm 6:53 into the second period. The Knights were able to maintain the lead throughout the remainder of the period however, Plattsburgh tied it up 8:47 into the third period sending the game into overtime.

 

Neumann's Mark Van Vliet scored the game winner 7:47 into overtime after receiving a pass from team captain Neil Trimm. Vliet's goal ended the two-day tournament for the Knights who acquired their second tournament championship this season and extended their season unbeaten streak to twelve.

 

Goalie Mike Collichio (8-1-4) had 24 saves in the win while Plattsburgh's Chris Molinaro stopped 26.

 

Neumann will return to action on January 5th when they host Utica College at 7:00 p.m.
