Box Score

Aston, Pennsylvania - The Neumann Knights captured their second win in two days against PAC rival Wesley College Tuesday afternoon in the third game of the season series 14-4.

Junior Phil Kelly retired the Wolverines in the top of the first inning by recording two strikeouts and a ground out, as the Neumann offense staked the right-hander with the early 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the frame. Senior Matt Backert started things off for the Knights with a single and added a stolen base to his credit before a Wesley error called him home for the early run.

Kelly continued to shut down the PAC visitors through the second and third innings as the top of the Knights line up rolled up to the plate in the bottom of the third. Backert repeated his first inning swing, a single up the right side line, jump starting a 2-run inning.

Doubles by James Jordan and Christopher Dascher extended Neumann's lead to five in the bottom of the fifth, but a double by Wesley's Jordan Smith in the top of the sixth broke up Phil Kelly's no hitter and put the first two of Wesley's four runs on the board.

Neumann answered back with a strong five-run sixth-inning extending the host's lead to ten. After Marc Torriero popped up, Josh MacDonald took to the plate for the first hit of the inning. Wesley walked Dave Thompson and hit Matt Backert which loaded the bases for Maloney who beat the pitch with a 3-RBI triple. Jordan extended the run and was repaid for his RBI-single, which scored Maloney, and Dascher's second double of the day scored Jordan for the 8-run lead.

Both teams were held scoreless in the seventh. Wesley did manage to put one more on the board in the eighth, but Neumann added four in the bottom of the inning, started off by a Brian Chesnick single followed by a Matt Backert double. Maloney was walked, which open the door for James Jordan who doubled, scoring Backert and Chesnick. The last two runs for the Knights were scored off of singles from Kevin Ahern and Nicholas Mendell ending the three day series with a 14-4 win, and the season series 2-3 in Neumann's favor.

The Knights will be back in action on Saturday, April 29 when they will host Alvernia College at 12:00 p.m. in a PAC double header.
