Immaculata, Pa. -The Neumann College women's soccer team (3-4, 2-1 PAC) snapped their three-game losing skid on Wednesday, defeating Immaculata University (2-6, 0-5 PAC) 2-1 in overtime, in Immaculata, Pennsylvania.
After the clubs exchanged scoring opportunities, it was Neumann that was able to get on the scoreboard first. In the 18th minute, a scramble for the ball broke out in front of the Immaculata goal; the Mighty Macs tried to clear it, but instead it was Neumann's sophomore Casey Geary (Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City) who emerged with the ball causing a breakaway, for the 1-0 lead.
Immaculata was able to respond 32 minutes later tying the game at 1-1 early in the second half however, that did not slow the Knights momentum. Neumann's Geary converted a pass from Angela Juliano (Seaville, NJ/Ocean City)
in the 61st minute to regain the lead. The Mighty Macs countered, scoring a successful penalty kick to tie the game at 76:39. That goal sent the game into overtime with both teams tied 2-2. The rulebook calls for two, sudden death; ten-minute overtime periods to be played, but the Knights would not need the second 40 seconds.
In the first minute of overtime, freshman Brittany Barley (Lancaster, Pa. /Lancaster Catholic) teamed up with Jess Kempa (Baltimore, Md. /Notre Dame), who took control of a rebound shot that came off of IU's goal keeper Kristi Dittbrenner, passing it to Barley, who was able to capitalize on the opportunity and score the game winning goal at 90:40.
Next up, the Knights will travel to Dallas, Pennsylvania on Saturday, September 23 in a PAC match up against College Misericordia beginning at 1:30 p.m.
