Neumann Outlasts Susquehanna in Season Opener, 48-47

Aston, Pa.- The Neumann Knights Women's Basketball team earned their first win of the season at home against the Susquehanna Crusaders on Monday night, 48-47 .  The Knights came back from a first half deficit to win on a dramatic last second free throw by Ashley Pearsall.

Neumann and Susquehanna battled back and forth throughout the first half.  Neither side could break off into an offensive rhythm as the half finished 19-18 in favor of Susquehanna.

Freshman Kieran Young (Padua Academy) provided a spark off the bench for the Knights with 4 points and 3 rebounds.  Sophomore Caitlin Agnew (Little Flower) delivered 7 points for the Knights in the first half.

The Knights got off to a quick start in the second half going on a 6 point run taking a 24-19 lead.  The Knights defenses caused three quick turnovers and were able to convert on the opportunities.

The Crusaders however, answered back settling down and tying the score at 26-26.  On the next possession, Brittany Whetts (Bartram) made an excellent individual play and brought the momentum back in the Knights' favor  as they took a 28-26 lead.

The Knights and the Crusaders would battle through four tie scores throughout the second half but the Knights would not give up the lead.  The most important tie came with 1:04 remaining in the game when the Crusader's Ruth Williamson made a layup tying the score at 47.    

With the last possession of the game for the Knights Ashley Pearsall (Prep Charter) drove down the lane and was fouled with 1.1 seconds left on the clock.  Pearsall took her free throws missing her first but connecting on the second giving the Knights a 48-47 lead.

The Knights defense denied the Crusaders final chance to score holding on to the lead, giving them the season opening victory 48-47.

The Knights were led by Brittanyh Whetts who had 12 points and added 8 rebounds, Caitlin Agnew had 13 Points and 8 rebounds, and Ashley Pearsall put up 7 points on the board.  Freshmen Krista DiRomualdo (Archbishop Prendergast), Katie Young (Padua Academy), and Kieran Young all recorded their first points as Neumann Knights in the 48-47 win.

The Knights will be back in action at Widener on November 24 at 1:00 p.m.
