Knights Edged Out by Elizabethtown College 55-50 in Home Opener

ASTON, Pa. - Mike Church scored 19 points, including 5 from the free throw line, to lead Elizabethtown College (4-0) to an intense 55-50 win over Neumann College (2-1) on Sunday afternoon at the Bruder Gymnasium.

Derahn Patrick scored 13 points, and DJ Fritz added 12 for the Knights, who could not overcome the Blue Jays' 16-21 night from the stripe.

Elizabethtown came out to a 5-point run before Neumann battled back to tie the game at 15:44 after Eli Hitchens scored the Knights' first points of the game and Fritz added a layup and a free throw good for three points and the tie.

Elizabethtown answered with six consecutive points by Mike Church, who led the Blue Jay's with a game high 19 points. Neumann managed to overtake its opponent after Hitchens and Thomas Davis scored two back to back lane jumpers and Derahn Patrick shot two free throws to give the Knights a 23-18 lead with under three minutes left to play in the first half. However, the Blue Jays' Mike Schatzman shot a three-point basket with 18 second left in the half to give Elizabethtown a 24-23 advantage going into the second 20:00 minutes of play.

The second half opened similar to the first as the Blue Jays came out on a six-point run. Neumann tied the game twice in the second half but could not overtake the lead. The Knights shot just 32.6 percent from the field while Elizabethtown shot 45 percent for the game.

Neumann will sit idle until Thursday, November 29, 2007 at which time the Knights will return to the court to host PAC rival Cabrini College in their first conference matchup of the season.  Game time is set for 8:00 p.m.
