Greensboro, NC - The baseball team began its season taking a tour down south. The Knights opened the season against Guildford College. Despite the long trip and cold weather the Knights challenged their opponents before falling 12-2.
Senior, Phil Kelly opened the season on the mound for Neumann pitching a solid three innings. Kelly received run support from juniors Nick Longmore and Chris Dascher both of whom hit home runs to give Neumann the lead into the fifth inning. In the bottom of the fifth Guildford jumped on top with a two run home run to grab a 3-2 lead before pulling away in the later innings to win 12-2.
Second year head coach, Dennis Murphy explained in his post-game comments the progress the team is making, "We had a long trip down to Guildford yesterday. Coupling the trip and the cold weather I thought the team played fairly well. But with it being our first game and a non-conference game we experimented with personnel in the late innings and saw people make positive plays." Coach Murphy continued by saying, "I thought Phil Kelly pitched well in the elements that we played in today. It is challenging to be an opening day pitcher. Phil did a nice job of stepping up and getting us in a position to have a chance." Coach Murphy will lead the Knights against Averett College on Sunday, February 19th.
