Aston, Pa. - In an evening road game against ECAC West rival Elmira College the No. 5 Neumann Knights came out on top 3-2 in overtime.
Neumann College's Mike Hedden scored the first goal of the night, on the power play, giving Neumann a 1-0 lead in the first period.
Elmira answered less than five minutes later, also on the power play, to tie the game at one. However, Hedden had no plans of ending the first period in a tie.
With 19:52 on the clock the St. Catherines, Ontario native scored his 24th goal of the season to give Neumann a 2-1 lead going into the first intermission. With that goal, the sophomore forward moved to No. 1 in the NCAA (Division II and III) for goals per game with a 1.09 goals per game average.
Though Neumann was out shot 25-12 in the first two periods, starting goaltender Mike Collichio kept the Knights in tact in the 3-2 overtime win. Collichio allowed the Pioneers just one more goal in the conference battle. Elmira's goal by Nicolas Dumoulin at 10:19 tied the game a 2-2. However, that would not be enough to shake Collichio who stopped a total of 31 shots in net.
The two teams remained tied throughout the next 30:19 of play, sending the Knights into their sixth overtime of the season.
In overtime Elmira took a quick shot off the face off but was denied by Collichio in the early seconds of play. Capitalizing on Collichio's outstanding performance in net, the Knights made their way into the offensive zone where Freshman Matt Ward took it upon himself to seal the deal for the Knights. The freshman forward from Petawawa, Ontario scored the game winning goals 55 seconds into the overtime, unassisted.
The win moves the Knights to 16-2-4 overall and 8-1-3 in the conference. Neumann will return to action on Saturday, February 3, against Elmira in the second game of the weekend series. The Puck is scheduled to drop at 7:00 p.m. For live coverage of the game log on to http://www.1410welm.com/
