Aston, Pa - The Neumann College Women's Lacrosse (0-1, 0-1 PAC) team took on Gwynedd-Mercy College (2-0, 1-0 PAC) in a conference match-up on Monday afternoon in Aston, Pa. Under new Head Coach Sarah Madrak the Knights fought resiliently but fell to the Gwynedd 16-12.
Gwynedd controlled the first 15-minutes of play scoring two quick goals but the Knights fought hard to tie it up. Neumann's Emily Kazaba pulled the Knights within one at 8:53 and Gabby D'Ambrosio scored the tying goal less than four minutes later. Despite tying the score the Griffins scored two goals within thirty seconds slowing Neumann's momentum. However, momentum swung in favor of the Knights just before the first half expired when Gabby D'Ambrosio scored her second goal of the game with 12 seconds left in the half.
The second half was full of goal scoring; in the end 21 goals were scored. Neumann scored and tying it up early with fancy stick skills from Rachael DiCicco making it 4-4. Then Gwynedd went on to have two separate occasions that they scored 4 goals in a row too take a 14-6 lead. The Knights would not give up and with a Dominique Thompson goal made it 14-10. After that, Gwynedd's Melissa Burks scored 2 of her 6 goals on the night to put the game away.
In the end the final score came to 16-12. Assistant Coach Jill Sinclair said after the game "It was the first time our girls played on lines together and were in a real game atmosphere. Despite the loss our defense played excellent and we will continue to improve."
The Knights next game will be Wednesday at Cedar Crest College in Allentown, Pa.
