Aston, Pa - On Sunday, March 25 Neumann College (2-4, 2-0) defeated the College of Misericordia 9 - 0 and 9 - 4 in a Pennsylvania Athletic Conference double header. It was the Knights home opener and first conference games of the season.
Senior Phil Kelly started on the mound in game one. Kelly pitched brilliantly allowing only 4 hits with no runs scored and 4 strike outs. The Knights scoring began when Dave Thompson started off the third inning getting hit by a pitch. After a single by Marc Torriero, Dave Dragone placed a beautiful bunt down the third base line loading the bases for freshman Martez Hagans who singled scoring the first run of the game for the Knights. Neumann's bats started to come alive scoring 2 more runs in the inning off a Kevin Lengyel sacrifice fly and a Kevin Ahern single.
In the fourth inning the Knights added four more runs to increase their lead 7 - 0 adding even more pressure to the Cougars. Phil Kelly (7 innings, 0 earned runs, and 4 strike outs), Kevin Lengyel ( 2 - 4, 2 runs scored and 3 runs batted in), and Christopher Dascher ( 1 - 3, double, 1 run scored and 2 runs batted in) where the key players in the Knights' victory in game one.
In game two, senior Tim DeFilippis started on the hill and pitched outstanding allowing only 2 runs in 5 innings with 5 strike outs. The first two innings of play the Knights and the Cougars battled back and fourth with the score even at 2 until the fifth inning. Neumann took the lead on a Cougars error which scored 2 runs.
In the sixth inning the Knights added four more runs to increase their lead. The Knights scored their first run of the inning on an error. Christopher Dascher hit his second double of the game scoring 2 more runs and freshman Keith Mastronardo added one more with a single.
The players of the game were Tim DeFilippis (5 innings, 2 earned runs, 5 strike outs), Chris Dascher (2-3, 2 doubles, 3 runs scored and 3 runs batted in), and Kevin Ahern (2-4, 1 run scored and 1 run batted in).
The Knights will be on the field on Tuesday, March 27 at 3:00 p.m and will host The College of New Jersey in a non-conference game at Bruder Fields in Aston, Pa.
