Chester, Pa. - The Neumann Knight's used a three-run first inning to edge by cross-town rival Widener University 5-4 in the first of a two-game non-conference softball double-header on Wednesday.
Neumann's Danielle Hays started things off for the Knights with a double up center field. She and starting pitcher Angela Sebasto were batted home by Samantha Duncan who hit her fifth career homerun to give the Knights a 3-0 lead over their hosts.
Widener answered with a run in the third inning and three in the bottom of the fifth but could not catch the Knights who added two runs of their own in the top of the fifth after a double by Caitlin Hanrahan and single by Audrie Porter put the Knights in scoring position.
In game two the Knights used two 7th inning homeruns to sweep the Pioneers 10-5. The Knights were down 4-1 after Widener scored 4 in the 3rd inning. However the Knights rallied back in the top of the 5th after Hanrahan hit her 18th double of the season and a single by Jen Goslin scored two for the Knights. Sebasto kept things going for Neumann with a single down the right side line followed by Duncan and Porter who hit back to back doubles up center field to give Neumann a 6-5 lead.
Neumann's Katie Kletzel managed to shutdown Widener in the 6th and 7th thanks to some defensive support from the field. The Knights closed out the afternoon with a 7th inning solo home run by Hays and a 2-run homerun by Jen Goslin ending the afternoon with a 10-5 win.
Wednesday's sweep marks the first sweep against Widener in Program history and ties the single game record for most double (6) which was set on April 9, 2007 against Marywood.
The Knights will return to action on Saturday, April 28, in their final conference match up of the season at Cedar Crest College. The afternoon double header is set to start at 1:00 p.m.
