Aston, Pa., - The Neumann College volleyball team split its first two games of the Haverford College Tournament on Saturday in Haverford, Pennsylvania. The team lost to tournament host Haverford College in three games but went on to defeat  Catholic University in the night cap also in three games. Neumann is now 1-1 on the season.

Highlighting today's double header was Neumann Knight Kristen Verone who broke Neumann's all-time career assists record. Verone came into the 2007 season with 2115 assists, just 65 shy of the record. In her first day of play the junior from Folsom, Pa. recorded 71 assists surpassing Neumann alumna Devon Pankowski (2180) who graduated in 2002 after 4-seasons with the Knights.

"This is a great day for Kristen," stated Head Coach Deana Jespersen. "She has worked really hard for this and we are lucky to have her as part of this team."

In the first game of the day the Knights were downed by Haverford, 30-12, 30-25, 31-29. Verone recorded 31 assists in the opener and added 15 digs to her credit. Team tri-captain Rachael Sokolovich recorded 12 kills and 8 digs while newcomer Ashley Mathis recorded 11 kills in her first outting as a Knight.

In their second match of the day the Knights were able to outlast Catholic. After winning game one 30-24,  the Knights continued their momentum taking games two and three 30-22 and 30-25. In game two Kristen Verone recorded 40 assists, five more than she would need to break the record. Sokolovich led the team once again with 11 kills, 4 errors and 32 attemps for a .220 average while Meghan Wilson had 19 digs in the win.

The Knights will continue to participate in the Haverford College Tournament on Sunday. Neumann is scheduled to face Susquahanna at 11:00 a.m.
