Aston, Pa. - The Knights lost, 52-51, to Misericorida University on a last second free throw by Amy Hughes on Saturday afternoon at the Bruder Gymnasium. The Knights led for the majority of the contest but could not hold off the Cougars. Neumann was lead by Krista DiRomualdo with 19 points and 7 rebounds and Dominique Thompson with 10 points and 5 rebounds.
"We controlled the first half, and slowed down the Cougars," stated Head Coach Frank Farnese."We didn't allow them to get into any offense flow and used our momentum to go into the half. In the second half, we had too many mental mistakes defensively and allowed them to get into an offensive rhythm."
The Knights started off slow and Misericordia capitalized as they took an early 8 point lead, 11-3. Then Dominique Thompson provided a spark, midway though the 1st half, scoring five straight points to bring the Knights within one, 11-10.
The Knights would take their first lead of the game, 12-11, as Kieran Young sank a layup at 11:17. From there the game went back and fourth until Krista DiRomualdo hit a three giving the Knights a 24-16 lead.
Late in the first half, the Knights would provide more offense to build a 14-point lead going into halftime 31-17.
The Cougars started to chip away in the second half and found themselves tied with the Knights, 43-43, with 6:06 remaining.
The game remained tight for the rest of the contest but with 00:01 left on the clock Amy Hughes drew a foul and went to the line to shoot two. Hughes hit the first and missed the second but that was enough to secure a come from behind victory for the visitors, 52-51.
"Instead of playing smart defense we played scared defense. We have to learn to protect a big lead, we took to many chances, that resulted in offensive production," stated Frank Farnese.
The Knights look to get back on track this Monday at Eastern University. Tip off is set for 6:00 p.m.
