Women's Basketball Win Home Opener

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann College women's basketball defeated Widener University and won the home opener, 69-62, to start the Thanksgiving holiday Wednesday night in non-conference action.

 

Katie Young led the Knights with 18 points. Brittany Whetts netted 17 and Nicole Feby added 12. Whetts was 9-for-10 from the line, including key shots down the stretch. Feby was 4-for-4 from three-point territory. Whetts led the team with nine rebounds.

 

Becky Tyler led Widener with 14 points. Barbara Fleming and Casey Pritz each posted 12. Pritz had a double-double with 12 boards.

 

Neumann came out strong in the first half and built its lead to as many as nine and took a seven point lead, 27-20, into halftime.

 

The two teams came out of the locker rooms and the Knights kept an average of a five points lead for most of the second half. Neumann built up a 10-point lead with 1:46 left in regulation. The Pride started to foul the Knights to try and get the lead. Whetts went 5-for-6 and Young was 4-for-8 at the line, in the final minute. Widener's Beth Dessart Mager hit a three-pointer with 18 seconds remaining to cut the lead to 65-62, but could not get any closer.

 

Neumann improves to 2-2 on the season. Widener is now 1-3. The Knights will travel to Susquehanna University on Saturday for non-conference action. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.
