Men's Ice Hockey Falters as Eagles Skate by Knights, 5-3

Aston, Pa. -- The Neumann Knights fell to the Elmira Soaring Eagles on Friday night 5-3 at Ice Works Arena.  The Knights fell behind early, 3-0 but rallied back to make it a 3-2 game but could stop the attack of the Eagles. 

With the win Elmira stays unbeaten this season at 17-0-2 and 8-0-0 in the ECAC West while the Knights drop to 15-5-0 and 5-4-0 in the conference.     

Elmira started off the scoring on a power play opportunity 6:58 into the first period. Rusty Masters took a quick shot which made its way past Mike Collichio giving the Soaring Eagles a 1-0 lead.

Masters double the lead for the Soaring Eagles to make 2-0 at 11:55.  Dave McKenna found Masters who put it high into the net on a two on one giving the scoring eagles the advantage going into the first intermission.

Elmira scored early into the second period to jump out to a 3-0 lead over the Knights.  Dave McKenna snuck the puck past the Soaring Eagles for his first goal of the night.

The Knights managed to come back to life in the second period when Michael Hedden wristed home a power play goal making it 3-1 game.  Mike Gooch and Neil Trimm found the All-American forward as he beat Elmira goaltender Casey Tuttle glove side on the power play.

Hedden then provide a power play goal for the Knights making it a 3-2 at the 15:50 in the second period. Kyle Casey set up Hedden who slammed it home for his 28th goal on the season.

Elmira got back on the board with less than a minute left in the second to go on top 4-2 on the Knights.  Rusty Masters put it in the top of the net putting Elmira back up by two and scoring a hat trick on the night.

Then at the 5:47 mark of the third period Elmira's Andrew Bedford scored to take a 5-2 lead in favor of the Soaring Eagles.

Matt Ward then provided a late goal for the Knights making it a 5-3 game but it was not enough as Elmira held on to win to the game, 5-3.  

The Knights will finish the weekend series with the Soaring Eagles on, Senior Night, tomorrow at 7:00 PM at Ice Works Arena.
