Knights Lose in a Close Home Opener, 3-2

Aston, Pa-  The Baseball team fell to the Albright Lions today 3-2 in a close game in the home opener .  The Knights took a 2-1 lead but could not hold off the Lions as they came back and won. Keith Mastronardo (Wayne, PA/Upper Merion) and Steve Marucci (Clarksboro, NJ/Kingsway Regional) provided the runs for the Knights.

 

The Knights got into trouble early when freshman Kurt Hayes (Sewell, NJ/Clearview) loaded the bases in the second inning but they youngster got himself out of trouble only giving up one run.  Hayes then came back into the third pitching strong striking out two Lions.

 

Neumann would get on the board in the fourth inning when Keith Mastronardo knocked a base hit scoring Lincoln-Kaleigh Schrock to tie the score at 1-1.  The Knights would take the lead later in the inning when Steve Marucci hit a pop fly and Ryan Mason scored on the play giving the Knights a 2-1 lead.

 

In the fifth inning, Kurt Hayes would load the bases again and this time surrender two runs on two walks as Albright would retake the lead 3-2 going into the bottom of the inning.

 

The Knights loaded the bases in the bottom of the 6th inning but relief pitcher Kevin Butler shut down the Knights not allowing a run.

 

Brian Alburger (Lafayette Hill, Pa/Plymouth Whitemarsh) robbed the Lions of any runs in the top of the 9th with a great diving catch in left field to keep the game within one.  The Knights had a change in the top of the 9th but a great diving play in the outfield ended the game for the Knights.

 

Neumann will back in action tomorrow vs. Widener University at 3:00 pm at Bruder Fields in Aston, Pa.
