Fayetteville, N.C. - The Neumann College Softball Team (28-12) defeated Christopher Newport University (33-9-1) 5-2 in the first round of the NCAA Regional Softball Tournament. With the win, the team will face No. 3 seed Methodist College at 2 p.m. on Friday.
When asked about his team's performance Head Coach Bill Saar said, "I always knew they could do it and they will continue to do it."
Junior Sheila Munson went 1- for- 2 from the plate with a double and two RBI, while Angela Sebasto pitched a complete game victory to lead the seventh-seeded Neumann College to an, 5-2 win over second-seeded Christopher Newport in the opening round of the NCAA Regional Tournament.
Munson's second inning double scored Danielle Hayes and Samantha Duncan for the 2-0 Knights' lead. Sebasto added to the lead in the top of the
fifth when she hit her first triple of the season off of Christopher Newport's Lindsay Kelly scoring Caitlin Hanrahan and Lauren Gallagher.
Sebasto kept CNU scoreless through four innings but gave up two runs in the fifth as Taylor Morgan singled to center field cutting the Knights' lead to two.
The Knights added an insurance run in the sixth as Christina Walsh singled and advanced on a wild pitch. Munson and Kimberly Kirkpatrick walked, setting the scene for pinch hitter Audrie Porter. Porter's single to center field scored Walsh and to gave the Knights their final run of the day.
Sebasto pitched 7 innings allowing only two runs on seven hits and fanning 3 to lead the Knights to their first NCAA Tournament victory in school history.
Neumann College improves to 28-12 overall and will face third-seeded Methodist College, who is 35-10, tomorrow at 2 p.m.
