Volleyball competes and completes in second day of Boxer Invitational

The Neumann College Volleyball team competed in the second day of the Pacific University volleyball tournament.  In the morning matches the Knights took on heavily favored and nationally ranked University of Puget Sound.  UPS is ranked 7th in country according to AVCA.org.  In the afternoon the Knights had the challenge of playing Pacific Lutheran University ranked 14th nationally.

Neumann was able to take a set from Puget Sound losing 3-1.  The scores were 17-25, 16-25, 25-21 and 16-25.  The Knights challenged their opponents in the third set behind local products seniors Kristen Verone (Folsom, PA/Cardinal O'Hara HS), Meghan Wilson (West Chester, PA./Bishop Shanahan HS) and sophomore Ashley Mathis (Norristown, PA./Norristown HS).  Verone had 23 assists to complement Wilson's 21 digs while Mathis led the team with 11 kills.  Puget Sound head coach was impressed with Wilson's effort stating post game, “Wilson was terrific.  She is one of the best liberos I have seen”.

In this afternoon's match the Knights took to the court to challenge 14th ranked Pacific Lutheran University.  The Lutes dominated the net with their height and power.  Neumann struggled to find its offense and ended up losing the match 15-25, 14-25 and 12-25.  Once again the Knights were led by Verone with 18 assists and 10 digs and Mathis with seven kills.

The Knights ended the nationally competitive tournament 0-4 but know they are well prepared for their upcoming season.  Head Coach Deana Jespersen said, “This was a fantastic tournament to play in.  The talent in this tournament is unbelievable.  This tournament taught us to compete at a higher level.”

Neumann will return home to play local rival Swarthmore College on September 3rd.
