ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Katie Young hit the game-winning lay-up to lift the Neumann College women's basketball team to a 61-59 win at Cedar Crest College in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action Thursday night.
The Knights held a six point lead with 5:11 left in regulation, but Leann Wallower tied the game at 59-all with 29 seconds remaining. After a timeout with 27 seconds left, Young made the game-winning basketball with just one tick left on the clock to give Neumann the win.
Brittany Whetts led the Knights with 19 points and nine rebounds. Young and Krista DiRomualdo each scored 10 points and pulled in six rebounds. Kieran Young grabbed seven boards.
Liz Sunderhaus scored 25 points and grabbed 13 boards for the Owls. Wallower netted 18 points and eight rebounds. Kelly Oakes notched nine rebounds.
Neumann held the lead for a majority of the game. With the score 18-17 Neumann at the 9:41 mark in the first half, the Knights went on a 12-2 run over the five minutes take an 11 point lead, 30-19. Neumann took a 41-28 lead at halftime.
Cedar Crest started to chip away at Neumann's lead in the second half. Just over six minutes into the second half, the Owls had cut the Knights lead to two, 45-43. Neumann kept Cedar Crest's surge off until the Owls tied the game at 59-all.
Neumann improves to 8-6 overall and 3-2 in the conference. Cedar Crest is now 5-6 and 2-3 in the CSAC. The Knights will travel to Rosemont next Thursday for a CSAC contest. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
