CHESTER, Pa. – The Neumann University women's basketball team defeated Widener University, 63-59, Wednesday evening in a non-conference, cross-town game.
The Knights had three played in double-figures. Brittany Whetts scored 15 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. Caitlin Agnew added 12 points. Katie Young notched 12 points and 12 boards.
Neumann started the game off slow and was held to only three points in the first five minutes of the game as Widener built an 11-3 lead. With 9:04 on the clock, Bethany Humenik hit a lay-up and brought the Knights to within three points, 15-12. However, the Pride scored the next six points for a 21-12 advantage. Neumann went into the locker room down nine, 36-27.
The Knights chipped away at the Pride lead in the second half and with 10:20 left in regulation, Nicole Feby connected on two free throws to tie the game at 42. Widener then scored four points, only for Neumann to score four points for a tie game at 46.
Widener built its lead back up to six, 52-46, with 5:26 left, but Neumann again answered with the next six points for the third tie score of the half, 52-52. Krista DiRomualdo hit 1-of-2 from the line and Neumann took its first lead of the game.
With 2:41 left in regulation and the scored knotted for the fifth time in the half, 55-55, the Knights netted the next five points over the next two minutes to take a 60-55 lead. Humenik netted two free throws with two seconds on the clock to seal the victory, 63-59.
Neumann (3-2) will face Rosemont to open its conference schedule next Thursday, December 3rd. The game at Rosemont will begin at 6 p.m. as part of the doubleheader with the men.
