HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – The Neumann University women's basketball team remained perfect in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play with a 93-91 win Saturday afternoon.
Brittany Whetts scored 25 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in the win. Bethany Humenik netted 22. Nicole Feby scored 11 while Krista DiRomualdo added 10. Katie Young pulled down 15 boards.
Jen Vasta led Centenary with 27 points. Hannah Ally netted 19 while Kristen Camuso added 16. Marissa DiStasio had 15 rebounds for the Cyclones.
The seventh tie of the game came with just 2:32 remaining on the clock in the second half as the teams were knotted at 87. Humenik sank a three-pointer with two minutes left to put the Knights up 90-87. Neither team would score a point again until Camuso made two free throws to cut the Neumann lead to one. Whetts and Young then went 1-for-2 from the line for a Knights three point advantage. The Cyclones Vasta then made two free throws with six seconds remaining to again cut the Neumann lead to one.
DiRomulado would make one-of-two from the line with five seconds remaining. Vasta then miss a game-tying shot as the buzzer sounded and the Knights came away with the 93-91 win.
The Cyclones held control for most of the first half, and built their lead up to as many as 15, 33-18, with 10:08 on the clock. With 6:57 left in the first half, and Centenary leading by 10 (37-27), Neumann went on an 8-0 run to climb within two. Sami Borcky hit a lay-up with 3:42 on the clock to give the Knights their first lead. Neumann would take a 47-45 advantage into the half.
The second half remained close, with the biggest lead by Centenary by six midway through the second half. There were three ties down the stretch as Neumann held on for the two point win.
Neumann improves to 9-4 overall and 4-0 in the conference. Centenary is now 7-5 and 4-1 in the CSAC. The Knights will host Philadelphia Biblical on Monday evening in conference action beginning at 6 p.m.
