WBB Battles Past Crusaders

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University women's basketball team defeated non-conference opponent Alvernia University, 78-73, Thursday evening. 
 

Brittany Whetts led the Knights with 25 points. Kaite Young notched a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds.

Alex Velazquez led the Crusaders with 25 points. Kelli McIntye scored her 1,000th career points as she netted 23 points in the game. Angela Altemose notched 10 points and 13 rebounds. 

With the score tied at 71-all and 2:45 left in the second half, Neumann held Alvernia to just two more points in the game. Neumann was down 71-70 when Whetts went 2-for-2 from the line to put the Knights back on top for good. Sami Borcky, Krista DiRomualso and Whetts notched key free throws in the final two minutes to seal the win.

Neumann opened the game strong by scoring the first 10-of-12 points to take a 10-2 lead. The Knights would build their lead up to as many as 17 points, 31-14, with 7:33 left in the first half. Alvernia would not go away and started chipping away at the lead. The Crusaders would get to within three points and the teams went into the locker room with Neumann up by a 39-35 advantage. 

The Knights would build a double-digit advantage again, six minutes into the second half, 55-45. But again Alvernia would not go away and tied the game at 68 with 5:15 on the clock. The Crusaders would then take their only lead of the game on an Altemose lay-up and free throw. Whetts then hit two free throws to take the lead back and the Knights would not relinquish the lead again.

Neumann improves to 14-4 overall. The Knights will host Cedar Crest College on Saturday in a Colonial States Athletic Conference match-up. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m.
