Men's Soccer Wins First CSAC Championship

ASTON, Pa. – Playing for their first ever Colonial States Athletic Conference Championship and a berth into the NCAA Division III national tournament, top seed Neumann University and second seeded Marywood University battled to a 0-0 double-overtime tie. 

The Knights outlasted the Pacers 6-5 in the third round of sudden death penalty kicks to garner the leagues automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. 

Marywood and Neumann matched each other's play in regulation as its played out to a 0-0 tie. Each had 17 shots throughout regulation and overtime, each placing nine on goal that would be denied by Marywood's Shane Quinn and Neumann's Bob Mastrillo.  Neumann held a 7-3 advantage in corners.

The Pacers buried their first three PK attempts. Joseph Avvento and Dan Chrashewsky scored on their penalty kicks. The Knight's third and fourth shooters missed. Marywood's fourth and fifth shooters missed. Zach Sell buried the Knight's fifth shot to move the penalty kicks into sudden death. 

In sudden death, Marywood and Neumann both made their first two attempts but Marywood's third attempt was no good.  As the 16th shooter and eighth for his team, Evan Morgan buried his penalty kick for Neumann to punch the Knight's ticket to the NCAA tournament.  

Neumann's Mastrillo was named the tournament MVP.

Neumann (14-3-2) will learn their NCAA tournament destination Monday at 2:00 pm when the NCAA announces selections over a webcast.  Marywood (14-5-1) will await word on a possible berth into the ECAC tournament.
