Women's Basketball Drops First CSAC Contest

SCRANTON, Pa. – The Neumann University women's basketball team dropped its first Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) contest to Marywood University, 71-65, Monday evening.

Brittany Whetts continues to lead the Knights, scoring 28 points and pulling down 15 rebounds. Sami Borcky added 11 points. Krista DiRomualdo went a perfect 6-for-6 from the line for six points.

Lauren Rogan led the Pacers with 21 points. Mariah Schaeffer added 20 points and Amanda Lass netted 11.

The teams remained close in the first half which featured eight lead changes and six ties. Marywood held the biggest advantage of the half, 22-15, with 6:04 left on the clock. Neumann then scored the next seven points to tie the knot at 22-all. The teams went into halftime tied at 31.

Neumann jumped on the board first in the second half and built up a seven point lead, 45-38, with 12:54 left in regulation. The Knights would hold the lead until the Pacers chipped away and tied the score again, this time at 50, the seventh tie score of the game.

The ninth tied score of the game was with the score knotted at 55-all with 2:55 left. The game came down to the final minute of play, in which there were 18 free throw attempts between the two teams, 16 were good. However, 14 of those attempts were by the Pacers and the Knights tried to get the lead back. 

DiRomauldo hit two of her free throws with 29 seconds on the clock to bring Neumann to within three points, 65-62. The Knights then fouled and the Pacers missed two free throws. Neumann set-up a three-point shot attempt, but Cecily Scavicchio missed her shot with 14 seconds left. 

Marywood hit two free throws to go back up by five points. Nicole Feby hit a three-pointer with four seconds left on the clock to bring Neumann within two points, but four free throws by the Pacers in the final two seconds sealed the win for Marywood. 

Neumann is now 15-5 overall and 10-1 in the conference. The Knights will host Cabrini College on Saturday in CSAC action beginning at 1 p.m. Neumann defeated Cabrini, 77-60, in the meeting earlier this season.
