PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Neumann University softball team stayed alive in the NCAA Regionals with a 10-1 win over Baruch College Friday afternoon.
Neumann's bats came alive in the game, pounding out 15 hits. Jennifer Goslin was 3-for-5 with a three-run home run. Crystal Perlman and Kim Kirkpatrick head added two hits. Lauren Castiello and Jacki Herrington knocked in two runs apiece.
With two runners on base, Goslin hit a bomb to left field to give the Knights an early 3-0 lead. The Bearcats responded in the bottom of the first when Mailenny Pena hit a solo homerun.
Herrington hit her second homerun of the season, a two-run shot, in the fifth inning as the Knights put four on the board for a 7-1 advantage.
Neumann added three runs in the bottom of the seventh, including a two-run double by Castiello, for a 10-1 score. Baruch did not go quietly in the bottom half of the seventh, but the Knights turned a double-play to end the game.
Sarah McGann then shut down Baruch, surrendering just one other hit in five innings of work and struck out six. Rachel Purpuro went the final two innings to preserve the win.
Neumann stays alive and advances to day two of the Providence Regional. The Knights will play at 2 p.m. tomorrow against an opponent TBD.
