Knights Open 2011 with Win at Alvernia

READING, Pa. – The Neumann University women's basketball team opened 2011 with a 63-58 win at Alvernia University Monday evening.

Katie Young, the current NCAA Division III leader in double-doubles, notched her 10th double-double of the season with 17 rebounds and 10 points. The senior also handed out four assists. Krista DiRomualdo netted 13 points. Sam Wilson pulled in 11 rebounds.

Angela Altemose led Alvernia with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Brittany Young had 12 points and Julie Hahn added 10.

The Crusader held the pace of the game in the first half and built up a 10 point lead, 16-6, seven minute into the half.  Alvernia again held a 10 point advantage, 30-20, with 5:14 remaining in the half. Over the next two minutes, Neumann started to chip away at the lead went on a 10-1 run, capped by a Wilson free throw, for a one point game, 31-30.

Erica Marvel then sank a three-pointer with 38 seconds left in the first half to give the Knights their first lead, 36-34. Neumann took the two point lead into half time.

Neumann continued its pressure as the second half started and netted the first 12 points to take a 14 point advantage, 48-34. The Knights would control play for most of the half, but the Crusaders would not go away quietly. With 2:04 left in regulation, Alvernia hit two free throws to cut Neumann's lead to two, 58-56. A basket by DiRomualdo and a free throw by Young in the final minute put the Knights back up by five and Neumann held on for the 58-63 win.

Neumann (6-5) will travel to Messiah College on Thursday evening. The non-conference game is slated to begin at 7 p.m. The Knights and the Falcons last met in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last season.
