ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University women's basketball team suffered its first Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) loss this afternoon to Gwynedd-Mercy College, 73-67.
Katie Young led the Knights with 22 points and 17 rebounds. Kieran Young and Erica Marvel each netted 15 points.
Bryn Cotteta netted 15 points for the Griffins. Brittany Neill added 14 points and nine rebounds.
Neumann scored the first eight points of the game. Gwynedd-Mercy sank its first basket 17:13 into the half and went on to score six of the next eight points to cut the score to 10-8.
With the score knotted at 15, the Girffins went on an 11-1 run to take a 26-16 lead with nine minutes left in the first, The Knights then went on a run of their own and tied the score at 26 with 5:03 left on the clock. Gwynedd-Mercy held a two point advantage, 30-28, at halftime.
The Griffins held the largest lead of the second half at the 8:54 mark, 54-41. The Knights did not let up and chipped away at the lead. Neumann got within one, 62-61, on three free throws by Marvel. However, the Knights could not get the go-ahead basket and fell 73-67.
Neumann is now 13-7 overall and 10-1 in the CSAC. Gwynedd-Mercy is 13-6 and 9-2 in the conference. The Knights travel to Immaculata on Monday evening for a CSAC doubleheader beginning at 6 p.m.
